Ashanti Shequoiya, also known by the name Ashanti, is a famous American singer and actress. She is an American singer-songwriter and actor. Ashanti became famous as a teenager and eventually signed to Murder Inc. Records in 2002. That same year, she appeared in Fat Joe's What's Luv? Ja Rule's track, Always on Time and Fat Joe's What's luv? The moment she dropped her single, What's Luv which ranked at the second spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and Foolish at #1 featuring Foolish as her debut single, she was the only female artist to accomplish this feat. Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas, also known by the name Ashanti was born in Glen Cove New York on October 13 1980. Tina Douglas, her mother was a former teacher of dance. Ken-Kaide Douglas is her father. Kenashia Shia is her youngest brother. Douglas was named Ashanti Douglas in Ghana after the Ashanti Empire. Women held enormous power and Douglas was hoping that Ashantis would follow in the footsteps of those. James' grandfather worked for Martin Luther King Jr. as a civil rights activist during the 1960s. Her mother was aware of her daughter's talent after hearing her sing Mary J. Blige's Reminisce. Ashanti appeared as a child extra in Spike Lee's Malcolm X in 1992 and Ted Demme's Who's the Man? There were a few appearances by her included music videos like K.R.S. Act One's MC's"Like They Don't Know" as well as 8 Off's Ghetto Woman.
